Cactus Wren

This cute little birdie is the Cactus Wren and is the state bird of Arizona! It is the largest wren in North America (about 7-9 inches long), and the male and female look alike.

They like to build their nests in cactus - preferably Chollas and Saguaros. Their nests resemble footballs with a hole in one end. They are noisy birds, and will chatter at other animals while they are building a nest.

Ted got these pictures while hiking this past weekend.

Speechless Sunday

Go Cards!

Today is U of L's chance to get in the NCAA Final Four! This picture is from Thursday's awesome game against Michigan State.

We have great seats, and I can't wait to cheer on the Cardinals today! Good luck!

Tonight starts a new season of Dancing with the Stars. My Red Hot friends have a pool each season where we throw $5 bucks in the hat and hope for the best.

I got M & M for my pick. I have confidence that Max will once again try the patience of his partner, and they won't win - he hasn't won yet!

Who do you think will win the mirrored trophy ball this go around?

The Lizard

The weather here has been wonderful with lots of sun and beautiful skies. I had lunch in our backyard yesterday, and glanced up to see a big lizard on the rock formation by our pool.

If you click on the picture to see it full sized, you'll realize that this gal needs to start using sunscreen and lotion! She already has very wrinkled skin, and summer isn't here yet!

From looking at other photos of lizards, I determined this is a female Chuckwalla. You can see a photo of one here to compare them. It says that the females are gray-brown with faint mottling or crossbars and often have faint gray bands on the tail. The common Chuckwalla is a rock crevice-dweller often seen sunning themselves on boulders and rock piles.

Tennis, Anyone?

March starts high school tennis season here in Arizona. Our friends' two daughters are on the tennis team. This past week was their spring break, and they had a tournament that lasted most of the day.

It was a beautiful day, and I decided to enjoy the sun and the tennis! They ended up winning the tournament in a nail-biting finish. As you can tell, the seniors on the team are so shy and really need to come out of their shells!

This is the coach with the seniors on the team.

Congratulations on the big win! I'm looking forward to watching more matches!

Hawk Eye!

Ted and I took a 4 mile hike yesterday through a section of the McDowell Preserve which is near our house. He has seen two hawks on different days, and we saw them again yesterday so they must have a nest in a nearby tree.

Then later we had a hawk flying overhead, and we got these pictures. They are such beautiful creatures! He was pretty high in the sky, so I can just imagine how big that wing span must be. I love the way the light shines through his tail!

This guy appears to be a red-tailed hawk! No bunnies or rodents were harmed during our sighting!
