Red, Red Roses

It was a gorgeous day, so Ted met me this evening for dinner at Qdoba. It felt great to sit outside and soak in some sun! Tomorrow is the Kentucky Derby, and for the past few years, we stop in at Kroger to see the ladies working on the garland of roses that is presented to the winner.

The outer rose petals of each rose are removed, and put in baggies for anyone who comes to watch them work their magic!

This is a replica of the trophy that is presented to the owner.

They work right up until the wee hours of the morning completing the garland.

Each rose is in its own vial of water, and the vials are hand sewn into the blanket.

Don't forget to watch the 136th Run for the Roses tomorrow!

Rest in Peace

Ted's very sweet Aunt Eva passed away yesterday morning. She was 85 years old, and until about a month ago, she had never been in the hospital! She spent a week there as doctors tried to discover the cause of low blood platelets. Yesterday morning when Ted's Mom called her, she said she had passed out. Ted's brother and Mom went to her house, and she was on the floor in the bedroom. By the time EMS got there, she was gone.

She was the oldest of 7 siblings, and the first to pass away. Eva never married, but had many nieces and nephews for which she played the grandmother role. She had been a bookkeeper at a local Office Supply store - a job she held since graduation from high school!

She celebrated most holidays with our family. Ted's Mom and Eva were very close and this is going to be especially difficult for her. They talked twice a day on the phone, and did their weekly grocery and hair appointments together.

We will certainly miss her gentle ways and genuine interest in our lives.

We'll Be in the Back!

Tomorrow we head downtown super early to join 14,498 other people who are running/walking in the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon/Mini-Marathon!

I'll be walking in the mini-marathon - 13 miles - as part of my training for the Susan G. Komen 3-day for the Cure in November.

I'm hoping for no rain which they expect in the afternoon. I'll be glad to cross this off my bucket list although I didn't realize I had it on my bucket list until I signed up for the Komen walk! The gal that cuts my hair said some of the hairdressers at her salon were going to walk in the mini-marathon, and I decided it was a great way to get in some training miles, and also to participate in a popular Derby Festival event!

Of course, all the walkers will be in the back of the group. It starts at 7:30 a.m. at one of the parks, and ends in the downtown area. I hope to get some fun pictures to share!

A Splash of Green and Red!

The grass in our front yard is looking the best it has ever looked. It was worth all the hard work when we killed off the previous lawn and replanted with seed. Isn't Mr. Squirrel cute? He isn't cute when he is stealing birdseed or digging holes looking for nuts, but he looks cute today sitting up like a little puppy dog!

A flash of red caught my eye when I looked out into the backyard this morning. Usually the red is from a cardinal bird, but today it is this red-bellied woodpecker! His head is red, but he is called a red-bellied woodpecker!

Take a look at his claws!

He likes the many hickory trees we have in our woods because lots of little goodies hide in the flipped out bark!

Ahhhh, spring is definitely awesome!

Faces!

Are you one of those people that looks at clouds and sees faces or animals? Well, I'm one of those people. I'm sure there is a name for people like us.

While I was trekkin' through the neighborhood, I had to take a picture of one of my favorite trees. And then I got the creepy feeling that the tree was watching me!

Have a fun weekend, and beware of trees with faces!

Nature Rocks!

How can you not like spring?

And why can't it stay around longer?

All the Little Robins Go Tweet, Tweet, Tweet

In addition to the goose eggs I have to worry about, I now have three robin eggs to watch! Ted came across this nest today while cutting the grass. He startled the mama bird, but later on, I saw her back on the nest.

The bad news is the location of the nest. It is not very high up in the tree which is located in the front yard. I've moved the cat food bowl from the front porch to Hotel S in the backyard in hopes of keeping the neighbors' cats from hanging around and finding this nest.

I'll be keeping any eye on it, and hoping that the birdies hatch and survive!

We Interrupt Bunco . . . . . . .

Besides talk of weddings, job hunting, and grandkids, we had some real excitement at Bunco last night! Sue looked out the window and realized the big cat climbing the tree and jumping onto the roof was really a raccoon!

Of course, I grabbed my phone to get a picture because . . . . . . I've got a blog to do, people! Bunco can wait!

Mary said she thought she had heard something on the roof yesterday morning, and it sounded louder than a squirrel! We're not sure if he was just chillaxin on the roof until it got dark, or if he was trying to get into her attic. She shut the upstairs bedroom doors just to be safe!

Speaking of getting a photo, head over to Walgreens where you can get a FREE 8 x 10 photo today! Free is good! Upload your picture to their site, and get it printed at your nearest Walgreens for pick-up later in the day. Enter BIG8x10 at checkout and you won't pay a dime!

Go Orange for Animals!

I've shared my life with animals for all but about 6 years of my life. So, cruelty to animals is at the top of my Go Directly To Jail and Throw Away the Key list. April is the ASPCA's Prevention of Cruelty to Animals month. Their website is full of ideas on how you can participate and Go Orange for Animals!

The easiest way to start is to click here and take their Pledge to Fight Animal Cruelty.

And then you can dress up your cat in an orange wig and attempt to get a photo before he gets irritated!

The world would be a better place if people respected their pets. Please spay and neuter your dogs and cats . . . . . . . don't chain a dog, they deserve better . . . . . . . never abuse or neglect!

Go Orange this April!

P.S. No animals were harmed in the taking of the orange wig photo - LOL!

Yesterday's News!

Do you own a cat? If you do, then you've probably heard of Yesterday's News which is a kitty litter made by Purina.

They're having a fun little handbag design contest with the winner receiving a trip to New York City in the fall to attend their Green Catwalk Event. This is my entry in the contest!

There are several purse templates to choose from, and then they provide different designs, and colors to decorate the purse. There are also choices of a background design.

You can check out the gallery of finished purses. You have until May 14th to enter one yourself . . . . . . but you must own a cat to be eligible. If you don't own a cat, this looks like a good reason to go get one!

Firsts of the Season!

This weekend was the first grass cutting of the season. And the first four-leaf clover discovery! I love searching for them, and it's always a thrill to find one!

Ted also moved all the catnip from the garden, and placed it in the woods and in a couple of old pots. It really took over the garden, and stayed green all winter! You can't kill the stuff.

I'm hoping to dry some of it this year for the cats, and for the catnip squares I include in the purchases from The Cat in the Clover shop!

Everything is really getting green, and the blooming trees are absolutely gorgeous! Spring has sprung, and I wish it would stay around for awhile!
