Red Revisited

I decorated for Christmas yesterday . . . . . well, as much as you can decorate with a kitty named Newman! I thought I'd show you how the mantle turned out. Red, the beautiful horse photograph from Sharon's Etsy shop will have another wall to live on after Christmas is over.

It is really too small for over the mantle, but I wanted him front and center during the holidays!

Can you believe December starts tomorrow? So much to do . . . . . so little time!

A Red Christmas!

Do you ever buy a Christmas present for someone, and then you can't wait to give it to them, so you do - before December 1st? Well, it happened today.

I've been friends for several years through Dogster/Catster with Sharon over at A New England Life. She is the one that got me blogging, and I'm the one that encouraged her to open an Etsy shop for her beautiful photography!

Well, she finally listened to me, and now you can have a little bit of New England in your home! I bought the photograph entitled Red for a Christmas present for Ted. Since we live in horse country, I liked the idea of having a New England horse.

I found a great frame yesterday while we were doing some shopping, and after putting it all together today, I couldn't wait to give it to him! Of course, when I get my Christmas mantle put together, it will look nicer, but I wanted to show it to you!

The photograph is printed on KodakPSupra Endura VC Digital Paper with a matte finish and an added Lustra coating to protect and enhance the image. All I know is that it is gorgeous, and we both love it!

If you need a gift for that hard-to-buy-for person, stop by Sharon's shop and check out her photography!

Donny Rocks!

I'm proudly wearing my vintage I heart Donny pin today in honor of his great win last night on Dancing with the Stars! Hopefully Red Hot Mama's daughter won't go looking in her stash for this pin cause it's now mine . . . . . . . all mine!

The Red Hots draw names each season for Dancing with the Stars. They all wanted to give me Donny's name, but I said I wanted to be fair, and if it was meant to be, it would happen.

Since there were more dancers than Red Hots, the extra names went to the person who had the first kicked off dancer.

I had to go through Ashley Hamilton, Debi Mazar, and Natalie Coughlin to finally be able to draw Donny's name! It was meant to be! And I won $30 to make it even better! Congratulations Donny and Kym.

Holiday Madness!

I don't have to tell you that Wednesday is one-month-til-Christmas! There is so much to cram into that month between the decorating, shopping, baking, cards, get-togethers, wrapping - it's enough to give you a headache if you think about it too long.

I've been busy making kitty stockings for my Etsy shop. I found the most adorable fabric with Santa Claus (or Santa Paws if you're a cat) surrounded by adorable kitties.

The first one got shipped to Ivan today. Santa stopped by and snuck in a few goodies before I mailed it.

Are you making your list for Black Friday? Do you get up at the crack of dawn so you can get to Kohl's by 4 a.m.? I think anything I want to buy will still be there by 10 a.m.! That is more my style.

A Partridge at the Foot of the Steps!

For various reasons, we haven't had a Christmas tree in several years. We usually get a live tree, and yesterday I decided to check out Garden Ridge to see if I could get a deal on an artificial tree.

Now I know why we get a live tree. The artificial trees are pathetic - unless you want to spend $300. I'd rather get new clothes than a $300 fake tree.

But, I'll spend $35 on two 4-ft. trees that are called "front porch trees". They come with a nice pot and already have the lights on them. And they were on sale - $35 for two - what a deal! And instead of putting them on the front porch, I can put them on tables, out of reach from most of the cats.

I said most of the cats. Newman is not most of the cats! Last year when Michaels had all their Christmas picks 90% off, I bought a whole slew of birds and feathers and glittery greenery. After I brought those trees home, I got excited about putting all the birds and stuff on them.

Apparently Newman was excited about it too.

I put one of the finished trees in the sunroom on a table, and one in the living room on a stand. He checked them out, but was very good . . . . . . . . . until around midnight when I heard him messing around downstairs.

I got my flashlight and went downstairs to check out the noise, and there it was at the foot of the steps.

A bird.

I should have known better!

In Their Memory

Today would have been my Mom's 78th birthday as well as her twin sister, Phyllis. This is my favorite picture of Mom - what a beauty!

Today I signed up to walk in the 2010 Susan G. Komen 3-Day For The Cure! I'll be walking 60 miles over three days in Phoenix, Arizona (land that I love)! I'm joining the Trekkin' for Ta Tas group which is led by a Catster friend I can't wait to meet.

Every participant has to raise $2,300. I know I can do it with a little help from my friends!

I'll be walking in memory of my Mom who survived breast cancer twice - 25 years apart. She also survived ovarian cancer.

I'll be walking in memory of Mom's twin sister, Phyllis, who lost her life to ovarian cancer.

I'll be walking in memory of my cousin, Linda, who passed away in May of this year from breast cancer.

I'll be walking in honor of my Dad's sister, Bernadine, who survived breast cancer.

I'll be walking in honor of Ted's cousin, Kris, who is currently battling breast cancer.

Cancer stinks! Walking 60 miles will be a piece of cake!

Up On The Roof!

They arrived early . . . . . they stayed late . . . . . . but they got the job done in one day!

It was a big mess, and it was super noisy, but I've never seen such a great clean-up job before. And do you want to know why the clean-up was so good? Because a woman did it! They had one woman on the crew, and her job was to pick up every piece of old shingle, nails and junk, and put it in a big truck. She sure earned her money for the day! The only thing I found in the yard were a couple of bottle caps from when they had lunch. I can live with that!

And here is the finished roof! Someone from the roofing company came today to install the gutter protection.

After a noisy day, it was nice to get together with the Red Hots for a little creative fun. Peggy's daughter owns a scrapbook store, so we went to the store - ate a little pizza and salad - and then created holiday cards!

We have a lot of November birthdays, so Peggy got this yummy cake! We missed you, Sharon, Lorie, and Pam!

Pass the Tylenol!

Tomorrow this faded, old roof will be bye-bye-bye! And the cats will have to endure hours of noise.

I dread it already!

Hotel S

I have no tolerance for people who are cruel to animals. And part of that cruelty includes people who leave their cats outside all winter to fend for themselves. I have neighbors that shouldn't own pets. And because I can't keep every stray or neighbors' cats that need homes, I do my best to help them out.

Last winter our woodpile that held a makeshift cat shelter fell over. So, this winter I wanted to do it right for those poor kitties who have no place to go when it is freezing with snow on the ground.

This website shows an easy-to-make winter shelter for feral cats. Here is the finished shelter - which I have named Hotel S - the S for stray, and also my last name!

I lined the inside of the smaller container with this very inexpensive emergency blanket which looks similar to aluminum foil. It is supposed to take the heat from your body and keep you warm, so I'm hoping it works.

The Hotel is two containers, one inside the other. I used fleece to line the inner container. The foil is under the fleece.

The entire inner container is surrounded by polystyrene which can be purchased at Home Depot.

Here is Hotel S in place - a new roof was installed on the woodpile and the tarp completely covers the container.

Of course, there is a ramp to get to the hotel.

We have our first guest! This is Vivien - a stray that has been sleeping in my garage at night. She was in the woods and watched me put the hotel in place. Later this afternoon, I saw her going back to check it out. At least she will have a place to get out of the rain.

I'm still hoping to find a forever home for Vivien. She is super sweet and cuddly, uses a litterbox with no problems, and needs a home before winter gets here! If you are in the Louisville, Kentucky, area, please spread the word!

Pawprints On My Heart

Cats leave pawprints on your heart, and now I have Calvin's pawprint on a heart.

Thank you to Dr. Laurelee Rubsch and the wonderful staff at Crestwood Veterinary Hospital for the loving care you gave Calvin, and for this beautiful keepsake.
