The thing to own when I was growing up was Barbie and her pink car! Here is what when wheeeew back in my Dad's day.

These are two of his toy trucks from the 1930's. They were made by a company called Structo. The green one was a mail truck, and was run by battery - which is still attached to the truck! The red one looks like some type of fire truck to me.

Here's hoping that 2009 brings an opportunity for all of us - kids included - to be more creative, and to use our brains to make this world a better place!

Thanks to my blog readers - I appreciate you, and hope you'll follow me throughout the new year!

Santa Gave Me Confidence!

When I sat on Santa's lap this year and he asked me if I had been a good girl, he then said, would you like a sewing machine for Christmas?

Wow! I sure would Santa! The last and only time I got a sewing machine, I had straight parted-down-the middle hair that came to my waist! I haven't had that hair in thirty-two years, so you can tell the age of my trusty Sears Kenmore.

I spent the morning ooohing and aaahing at all the automatic stuff and building my confidence that I can handle the Singer! The best feature has to be the helpful little dude that threads the needle for you. Where has he been for the past several years? I'm going to name him Ned.

Santa gave me other fun things, but I especially love this new camera strap cover that hides the ugly black one that comes on all cameras! Santa got it at this Etsy shop - Silly Jilly Boutique!

And it looks like I'll be getting another Christmas present today because my car's battery is dead! Don't you love those kinds of presents?

The Best Laid Plans

The road trip was cancelled! Due to a

coming from our bedroom ceiling! A drip that originated from the attic which originated from the chimney area of the roof which happened after said roof had been fixed last May!

I'm glad I hadn't gotten around to getting the stained ceiling repaired and repainted because now it is even worse!

And just why in the world are roofers not working the day after Christmas? How dare they take a holiday! So, the guys who fixed the roof last May are coming out on Monday to re-fix whatever didn't take last time.

It's one of those drips that runs along the beams in the attic - nothing you can put a bucket under. And more rain is expected this weekend.

An attempt to get the Ohio relatives (there are only two of them!) to come here didn't fly, so we met them today in West Virginia (half way spot) to have lunch and exchange gifts. Not exactly the Christmas that Ted's Mom was hoping for, but her idea of Christmas is the way they celebrated as a family back in the 60's. Getting an older person out of a time warp isn't easy - believe me, I've tried!

We had an enjoyable visit, and the 70+ degree temperature made it a nice day for being on the road . . . . . . . . and even more enjoyable without a five month old kitten tagging along!

Back in a Few!

We're leaving in the morning! After dropping off the dog at the resort, and making sure the cat-sitter has everything she needs.

Why do I get the feeling we won't be smiling much like these two?

Computer-less while I'm gone - ugh! I hope you're enjoying Christmas day with your families!

Merry Christmas!

Wishing all my blog readers a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and may 2009 bring you many blessings!

We'll be on the road for a few days after Christmas, traveling with a 5 month old kitty - keep us in your prayers - I'm thinking it will be worse than traveling with a baby on an airplane!

How Ironic - and Unexpected!

I had to laugh last night when the neighbor's two little girls came to the door with this adorable Hershey's kiss tree for us!

Yesterday I was talking about unexpected gifts, and then I received one!

They were both beaming when they gave it to me. They said their Mom found the idea on the internet, and to be careful because some of the kisses fall off. I think the weak candy should be eaten right away, don't you?

The Unexpected Gifts

Do you give out any unexpected gifts? I've enjoyed finding treasures to make around blogland for some of my unexpected gifts this year.

I made a bunch of these cute purse kleenex holders that I saw over at Simply Me! My Red Hots each got one, and so did the Bunco gals, and a few other friends.

And these super easy yummy treats from Thrify Decor Chick were made for some of my neighbors and the staff at the vet's office. Scroll down when you visit her blog and look for the pretzel/Hershey's kiss/M&M cookie/candy yum yum! The new candy cane Hershey's kiss makes these so pretty!

And here is my yearly tradition - Lemon Blueberry Poppyseed Bread! I usually give a loaf to my mail lady, the three vets, my hairstylist, Ted's hairstylist, and a loaf for us too!

1 package Duncan Hines Bakery Style Blueberry with Crumb Topping Muffin Mix
2 tablespoons poppy seeds
1 egg
3/4 cup water
1 tablespoon grated lemon peel

1/2 cup confectioners sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 8 x 4 inch loaf pan (or 3-4 small loaf pans). Rinse blueberries with cold water and drain. Empty muffin mix into bowl and add poppy seeds, stirring to combine and break up any lumps. Add egg and water and stir until moistened, about 50 strokes. Fold in blueberries and lemon peel. Pour into pan and sprinkle topping from packet over batter.

Bake 350 degrees for 57-62 minutes (~45-50 minutes for small loaf pans), or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Loosen loaf from pan. Lay foil over top when removing to keep topping intact. Invert onto cooling rack, right side up. Cool completely.

For drizzle, combine confectioners sugar and lemon juice in small bowl. Stir until smooth, and drizzle over loaf.

Besides family, friends, and teachers, do you give out any other unexpected gifts?

When The Weather Outside is Frightful!

This was the first fire of the season - a couple of nights ago. I thought I'd post this for all those who are snowed in - freezing their tails off! We don't have snow, but it is cold. I'm not fond of cold . . . . . . or snow!

But I am fond of a nice warm fire! And I have my own personal wood chopper, fire builder. Otherwise, that fireplace would never get used!

Even Newman knew that being in front of the fire is so toasty and relaxing!

Warm and Woolly!

I don't care if Oprah doesn't like holiday sweaters - they get you in the mood for . . . . .

Ski trips,

Hot chocolate around the fire,

Wrapping presents,

Visiting friends,

and having dinner with the Bunquettes at BJ's Restaurant! And the famous PIZOOKIE for dessert! And whipped cream in the coffee! And fun gifts! And the obnoxious group of super loud ladies at the table next to us!

Where is Mary, you ask? Well, the ditzy hostess at BJ's can't take a picture and get everyone in it! And yes, I had her take two pictures - there were only six of us in the other one! Sorry, Mary!

Questions to Ponder

Where do butterflies go in this cold weather?

Who would have thought hanging cups and saucers on a tree would look this cute?

Do you wonder what is under that bread?

Can you guess how old Doreen is going to be on Thursday?

Do you think this hole was a defect in the manufacturing process?

Isn't it fun to get a gift you have to figure out?

And probably the biggest question we pondered today . . . . . . . when you have pants with a zipper . . . . . . does the zipper go in the back . . . . . . or in the front?

Have a Happy Birthday on Thursday, Doreen!

Answers to questions

1. I have no idea.

2. Not me.

3. Chicken salad.

4. I'd tell you, but then she would have to kill me.

5. No

6. Yes

7. According to my pants, the front. That's all I'm sayin'!
